It's a durian!

Picture of a durian.

What is it?

This thorny fruit grows on tall trees and is very popular in Asia. Cut it open and you'll find a substance like sticky custard or soft cheese. If you try durian, you might want to hold your nose.

Why should you care?

Durian is the world's stinkiest fruit. How stinky? In Asia, there are rules banning it in planes and hotels because it really smells. The scent is hard to describe, experts say, but they compare it to very, very, smelly cheese. If you can get past the smell, some people say the taste is heavenly.

How do you eat durian?

It's often eaten with rice or used to flavor ice cream.

Anything weird about durian?

What isn't weird about durian? Sure, it's got a porcupine appearance and an overpowering smell, but the weirdness of this soccer-ball-sized fruit doesn't stop there. People are willing to pay a lot of money for it. Pound-for-pound, it's the most expensive fruit in the world. One durian, at $5 per pound, could cost you $30 to $40.
